Apricot kernels are the seeds of the Apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca), native to Central Asia, and are very similar in taste, texture and appearance to Almonds. Though tasty (imparting its flavor to the famous Italian liqueur, Amaretto, among other things), Apricot kernels are edible only in small quantities, as eating large quantities can lead to poisoning.
Apricot kernels are also a part of traditional herbal medicine and are said in Chinese medicine to help in the treatment of cough, congestion and constipation. In Ayurveda it is considered as helpful for pacifying and controlling the vāta dosha.
Apart from its edible and medicinal qualities, Apricot kernels also have important uses in natural skin care routines.
Apricot Kernels in Skin Care
Apricot kernels yield Apricot oil, which is very similar to Almond oil and is often recommended as an ideal carrier oil, diluting and carrying other essential oils in special massage oil blends. Apricot oil is high in Vitamins A, C, E & K and other important antioxidants & omega fatty acids. It thus helps in reducing inflammation and protects the skin from damage and premature aging, leading to radiant, youthful and elastic skin. It also helps to even skin tone and smooth away blemishes or dark spots (especially under the eyes).
Though Apricot kernels can yield amazing Apricot oil, that is not their only use in natural skin care. Apricot kernels also can be made into Apricot kernel powder or grit, which acts as a wonderful natural exfoliant when included in soaps or natural body scrubs.
Apricot kernel powder is a gently abrasive exfoliant and when included in soap or body scrubs, it helps to remove dead skin cells and thus open clogged pores and stimulate collagen production, leading to soft and supple skin with a youthful lustre.
