Every morning, people all over rural India entrust their oral health to the humble Neem tree, taking young twigs from nearby trees to brush their teeth with.
Twigs are chewed on one end to release the beneficial compounds and to create individual fibers, and the teeth are brushed in a similar way as with the modern toothbrush. It is a ritual which repeats itself in villages all over India and which has probably been the regular practice for a few thousand years. This is a lasting testament to the incredible power of Neem, which has been called in Ayurveda since ancient times as sarva roga nivarini (सर्वरोगनिवारिणी), “The protector from all diseases.”
All parts of the Neem tree (Azadirachta indica) have traditional medicinal value: the twigs, leaves, bark, roots, fruits and seeds. Scientists have found and isolated many important medicinal compounds from Neem, having antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and other properties. The many uses of Neem even go beyond human health and extend to various kinds of pest control and food crop protection.
In regards to oral health specifically, Neem is traditionally used for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to promote optimal health of the teeth and gums, reducing plaque and associated bacteria. (Check out this great article on the scientific benefits on Neem in oral health)
